Kintsugi has existed since the Edo period,when Chanoyu, or the “Way of Tea” began to be commonly practiced.Back in those days, Chanoyu was a hobby for the rich and famous.

The famous warlord, Oda Nobunaga, was also an avid collector of tea utensils.He would even reward his subordinates with high-quality tea utensils for outstanding contributions.To these subordinates who received such utensils, it was the one and only proof of their achievements in battle.

As these high-quality utensils could not be bought with money,They would be repaired and reused when broken.

That is how Kintsugi came into being.

Fun Fact(2)The Unique Japanese Sense of Beauty

After ceramic utensils are repaired with Kintsugi, these repaired cracks came to be known as “Keshiki”, or scenery in English.

For example, the picture below shows a repaired ceramic utensil that resembles a river flowing through a majestic forest.

These “Sceneries” are an embodiment of the unique Japanese sense of beauty.
